Updates from Foster Home:
Pupdate 3: Alto has grown to be more comfortable in his surroundings and has gained a lot of confidence. He now loves wrestling with and chasing our dog in the backyard. He is a curious pup and loves to explore the prairie plantings in our yard. He has a spunky personality and is very loyal. He would make a great companion dog.
Pupdate 2: Alto spent a very relaxing Memorial Day lounging around in our yard and chewing on a bone. He discovered hammocks, which he is a big fan of. Alto is an expert snuggler and is the perfect size for a lap dog. We took him down to the capitol to walk around and get him used to meeting new people and hearing strange noises (he was startled by the bus and some motorcycles). He is so quiet for a beagle mix. He rarely barks or howls. He now goes into his crate to sleep at night on his own.
Pupdate 1: Alto sleeps in our room uncrated with us. I get up around 5 am and let him out, feed him, then take him on a 30 min walk. He gets crated with a pee pad when I leave for work around 7 am, then gets let out again when I get home from work around 5 pm. Then he gets dinner and another walk. If the weather is nice, he and my resident dog hang out in the backyard for a few hours. He is let out again around 10 pm. Alto is still pretty shy around new people. I have found it's best to ignore him and let him come up to investigate you. He is easily startled by loud noises or sudden movements, but he warms up to you after a while. He hasn't really been around kids but would probably be scared of them.
Alto loves to follow you around. He is great about taking a nap if you're reading or working on the computer, but as soon as you get up, he will also get up and follow you. He does great on long walks and can keep up. You could probably turn him into a jogging buddy if you're into that. He does like to pull on the leash if he sees another dog, but he doesn't bark at them. Alto is fine with other dogs; he is definitely submissive. Our dog has been great for boosting his confidence, but he would probably also thrive in a home where he was the only dog. He has not been around cats much but would probably be intimidated by them based on our encounters with the neighborhood's outdoor cats.
He can be left alone for probably 4-5 hour stretches uncrated. Chewing isn't really an issue, but he will knock over stuff on accident. He likes to just hang out on the couch and maybe look out of the window. We have come home to some wet spots (but we think they were from right when we got home and he was really excited to see us.) He still has some work to do on house training but he's been making it through the night without any accidents. Alto is surprisingly quiet and chill for a beagle puppy. He only makes noise when he is crated. Although initially shy, he will warm up to you in time and then never leave your side. He is really sweet overall, and loves to snuggle up next to you on the couch! He would be a good apartment dog.
